Nabire, Central Papua – Pepaya Island, a small island located in the Cenderawasih Bay area, is now gaining attention as one of the promising marine tourism destinations in Nabire Regency. Despite its small size, the island offers clear sea views, wide white sand beaches, and a well-preserved coastal ecosystem. In recent years, Pepaya Island has been increasingly visited by local tourists seeking a nearby tourist spot that still offers a natural atmosphere.

A Peaceful Island on the Cenderawasih Bay Tourist Route
Field observations show that Pepaya Island can be reached by motorboat from several locations on the coast of Nabire. The average travel time ranges from 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the starting location and weather conditions. With its easy access, the island is often chosen for day trips by locals and visitors from outside the area.
Pepaya Island is located in waters that tend to be calm throughout the year, making it a popular alternative tourist destination to other popular spots such as the Nabire whale shark area and other small islands in Cenderawasih Bay.
Well-Preserved Marine Ecosystem
Based on observations from several local tour guides, Pepaya Island has shallow waters with good clarity. The clarity of the water allows visitors to see the seabed directly from the surface without having to dive. Coral reefs grow in several areas of the island, providing a habitat for small fish and tropical marine organisms.
“Around the island, there are still many small fish, and the coral reefs are well preserved. This makes it attractive for light snorkeling,” said one of the tour operators I met in Nabire.
Although the underwater activities here are not as extensive as in whale shark conservation areas, Pepaya Island is still considered a promising place for educational tourism and introduction to marine ecosystems.
A Quiet Destination Popular with Local Tourists
Several field guides reported that Pepaya Island is most visited on weekends and holidays. The island’s lack of commercial activity makes it a favorite location for picnics, relaxing, or enjoying the expansive sea views.
“This island is perfect for those who want to relax while enjoying the clear water,” said a local tourist.
The absence of permanent infrastructure or large facilities on the island creates a more natural atmosphere. However, this also means that tourists are advised to bring their own supplies, including drinking water and other equipment.
A number of tourism operators in Nabire believe that Pepaya Island has great potential to become part of ecotourism development in the region. With good management, the island can be used as a place for coastal education, coral reef conservation, and tourism based on the local community.
However, some parties also remind us of the importance of maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability. The increasing number of visitors has the potential to cause waste accumulation if it is not accompanied by awareness to protect the environment.
“If managed properly, Pepaya Island can become a leading tourist destination. But the most important thing is to keep the island clean,” said an environmental volunteer who actively monitors the coastal area in Nabire.
In the marine tourism map of Nabire Regency, Pepaya Island is currently considered an addition to major destinations such as whale sharks in Kwatisore, Ahe Island, and other small island groups. With its simple yet striking appeal, the island is expected to become one of the daily tourist spots that help drive the local economy.
The local government and tourism industry players continue to promote marine destinations, including small islands such as Pepaya Island, as part of the sustainable tourism development plan in Central Papua.
