The New Autonomous Regions Bill (DOB Bill) , discussed by the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia in 2022, chose Nabire Regency as the capital of Central Papua Province. As the entrance to the sea toll road for other districts in the Meepago area, Nabire had a very strategic position, according to Mesak Magai, the regent at that time. Mesak said that of the nine districts/cities in Papua, which at that time was still called Irian Jaya, Nabire was the oldest.
The Origin of the Name “Nabire”
The history of Nabire Regency, which is currently the capital of Central Papua province, is deeply embedded in the various indigenous groups that call the area their home. The community has come up with various theories regarding the origin of the name “Nabire,” which describes the rich cultural heritage of this region.
According to the Wate tribe, the word “Nawi” which describes the abundance of crickets along the Nabire River is the source of this name. This name evolved into “Nawire” and then “Nabire” as time went on.
There are two variations among the tribes of Yerisyam. The first, “Navirei” means “abandoned area”, and the second, “Na Wyere” means “lost area”, which emerged after the locals were forced to evacuate due to an outbreak of disease.
On the other hand, the Hegure tribe referred to this area as “Inambre,” which means “coastal area with many palm trees.” Eventually, this name was changed to “Nabire” as a result of contact with immigrant tribes.
Government Trip in Nabire
Somin Soumokil became the first district official when the Dutch government established a district in Nabire in 1942. Later, due to its more favorable location on the coast, Nabire replaced Enarotali as the capital of Paniai Regency in 1966.
A significant shift occurred in 1996 when Paniai Regency was renamed Nabire Regency in accordance with Government Regulation No. 52 of 1996. After that, this area experienced growth along with the establishment of Paniai Regency and Puncak Jaya Regency.
