Beyond the Summit: Celebrating Indonesia’s Independence at Carstensz

CENTRAL PAPUA — The spirit of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day reached the highlands of Papua as the Red and White flag was raised at the foot of Mount Carstensz on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

Initiated by Maximus Tipagau, the ceremony brought together representatives of the Papua Tengah Regional Police, local communities, PT Freeport Indonesia, Lorentz National Park, and local media in a meaningful celebration surrounded by the dramatic landscape of Carstensz.

The ceremony was led by Papua Tengah Police Chief Brigadier General Pol. Jeremias Rontini, S.I.K., M.Si. and attended by AKBP Alfredo Agustinus Rumbiak, S.I.K., M.Tr.Mil., M.Han., PT Freeport Indonesia representatives Yongki Wopari and Rode Ajomi, Lorentz National Park representative Hendra Saputra, indigenous community leader Markus Beanal, and members of the local media.

One of the most memorable moments was the participation of members of the indigenous community in the flag-raising ceremony. Wearing traditional attire, they became an important part of the celebration, bringing Papua’s cultural identity into a national moment of unity.

More Than a Mountain

For Adventure Carstensz, an experience at Carstensz goes beyond reaching a summit.

The region offers a unique combination of dramatic mountain landscapes, indigenous culture, biodiversity, and stories that have shaped Papua for generations.

Carstensz is therefore not simply a destination for mountaineers. It represents an opportunity to experience a part of Papua where nature and culture exist side by side.

The Independence Day ceremony offered a powerful example of this connection. The Red and White flag was raised against the backdrop of the Carstensz mountains, while members of the local community took an active role in the ceremony.

It was a moment that reflected both Indonesia’s national identity and the cultural identity of the people who call this region home.

Building the Future of Carstensz Tourism

The event also highlighted the potential of Carstensz as a world-class tourism destination.

With its extraordinary highland environment and unique cultural setting, Carstensz has the potential to attract travelers seeking experiences that go beyond conventional tourism.

However, the future of tourism in Carstensz depends on responsible development.

Tourism must go hand in hand with environmental conservation, respect for indigenous culture, community participation, safety, and sustainable tourism practices.

For local communities, tourism can create opportunities in guiding, transportation, hospitality, cultural experiences, logistics, and other tourism-related services.

This approach allows tourism to become not only a way to introduce Carstensz to the world, but also a means of creating meaningful opportunities for the communities around it.

A Destination with a Story

Carstensz has a story that goes far beyond its elevation.

It is a place where travelers encounter challenging terrain, extraordinary landscapes, and the living culture of Papua.

The Independence Day ceremony added another chapter to that story.

As the Red and White flag flew at the foot of Carstensz, the moment carried a simple message: the beauty of Indonesia can be found not only in its famous destinations, but also in the people, cultures, and landscapes that make each place unique.

For Adventure Carstensz, this is the future we envision—a Carstensz that is accessible to the world while remaining respectful of its nature, culture, and communities.

From the mountains of Papua, Carstensz continues to invite the world to discover something extraordinary.
